Artist Statement

My work takes the questions that I have about current events, consumer products and modern life and frames them in a poignant, familiar, classic context for the viewer to ingest, and seek answers. I am attracted to posters for their ability to present thoughts in an easily comprehended manner. My posters speak the unspoken words of advertising and modern day decision making.  The questions I have are asked and sometimes answered in my art. My posters speak boldly in a format that grabs attention quickly.  Though the questions and answers may not immediately present themselves, the viewer is given the opportunity to explore them.

My posters begin with an idea that can come from anywhere including newspaper articles, commercial ads, dreams, jokes or anything that amuses me.  If the idea makes me laugh, it gets the green light.  Painting on glass allows me to highlight my strengths in the use of color and composition.   I began painting on glass after getting the idea while working on another project.  On that project I used hand cut stencils to paint the subway map of Manhattan on a tabletop.  After removing the stencils I noticed the pure color and clean lines that came out on the other side.  Since I tend to see objects as shapes, this simple, clean style of illustration offered a playground, with challenging boundaries, where I could let my ideas run free.

This work is the current state in the evolution of my creativity.  As I mature, I realize that I have a political and social viewpoint.  My work expresses what I see around me, and the questions that rise from within.  Through my posters I attempt to express the underlying messages we receive in modern communication and practices that we ignore, fail to acknowledge or question.  I also find them to be a lot of fun.
